About us
Bill Spratt established Medway Memorials in 1986.
Originally from Aberdeen (The Granite City) Bill started
his apprenticeship in 1965 at William McKay & Son,
one of the largest and most highly respected Granite
Memorial companies in the UK in the 1960's
Having a good knowledge of the Granite Memorial trade
stood him in good stead when he moved to London in the
early 70's and his ability to shape and polish granite
together with sandblasting ornamentations meant he was
much in demand with the monumental companies in London
where there was a shortage of these skills.
At that time, white marble from Italy was the main
material being used in manufacture in the South East,
as granite memorials were all made in Aberdeen. There
were also a lot of Monumental Masons yards in London
employing a wealth of highly skilled marble masons and
sculptors who Bill was able to draw valuable experience
from. This enabled him the achieve a complete knowledge
of all types of manufacture in all types of materials
Bill worked as a freelance mason, sculptor & carver
supplying the memorial trade for the next fifteen years
and became known across London and the Southeast. It
was this period up to the mid 80's that convinced him
it was time to start his own business. As he lived in
Rochester, Medway Memorials began.
Originally started as a wholesale business Medway Memorials
grew quickly and in 1992 moved to the new premises it
now occupies in Rochester.
Medway Memorials has a team of highly skilled tradesmen
still producing handcrafted memorials in the traditional
way together with modern computer design and lettering
services that have now become essential in the industry.
Experienced staff are always on hand with advice and
are able to help with the difficult job of choosing
a memorial, composing an inscription or listening to
clients own design ideas in order to provide a service
customers require at a difficult time.
